The design proposal derives its spatial order from the existing contours of the site; it establishes a symbolic ascent from the Entry Plaza to the Chamber of Memory – a gallery space carved into the earth that will orient visitors to the tales of valour, and evoke the history of the Sino-Indian war and the critical roles of the soldiers from Arunachal Pradesh. This project seeks to create a powerful place for contemplation and memory – a memorial dedicated to the gallant martyrs from Arunachal Pradesh who made the supreme sacrifice for their country.
The Chamber of Memory is oriented to the view of the distant mountains, engaging this experience with the natural landscape. The journey from this plaza, flanked by planted terrace gardens, rises to the crest of the hill. At this high point, visitors enter a terraced amphitheatre, covered with a planted terrace roof. This space is focused on the most significant element of the design – the Martyrs’ Plaza.
