This project proposes a comprehensive master plan for a hundred acre orange orchard in rural Punjab. Encompassing a diverse program – housing for farm workers, a cattle shed for dairy farming, a large enclosed work shed, and a residence for the owner – the design derives its iconography from a simple vocabulary of local building materials. The scale of the buildings is carefully calibrated to the human activities in each building. Services and infrastructure are purposefully simple, and arranged along the spine of the master plan. This project seeks to accord dignity and elegance to an often overlooked architectural constituent – the daily wage employee in rural India.
